C-Arm Machines: Key Factors in Choosing a C-Arm for Surgery

As medical professionals, ensuring the success of surgical procedures is of utmost importance. One crucial factor in achieving this success is having the right equipment to best maximize your practice. To make an informed decision when selecting a C-Arm for surgery, it’s essential to consider several key factors. This blog provides valuable insights into these factors, ultimately helping you choose the right C-Arm machines to benefit your medical practice and your patients.

Understanding C-Arms

A C-Arm is an imaging device that employs X-ray technology to generate real-time, high-resolution images during surgical procedures. The name originates from the C-shaped arm that connects the X-ray source and detector. This unique design allows for effortless movement and precise positioning around the patient.

To operate C-Arm machines, the X-ray source emits beams that pass through the patient’s body. On the opposite side, the detector or Image Intensifier captures these beams and converts them into digital images. These images are then displayed on a monitor, providing surgeons real-time visual guidance throughout the procedure.

Medical professionals commonly use C-Arms in various fields, such as orthopedic, vascular, and cardiac surgeries while also playing a significant role in pain management and emergency procedures. C-Arms improve patient outcomes and enhance surgical precision by offering accurate and real-time imaging.

Image Quality and Resolution

The primary purpose of a C-Arm machine is to provide clear and accurate images during surgery. High-resolution images allow surgeons to see intricate details and make precise movements, reducing the risk of complications and improving patient outcomes. Therefore, image quality and resolution should be at the top of your list when evaluating different systems.

ImagPros can help you choose a brand-new C-Arm or an affordable refurbished model!

Size and Mobility

C-Arms come in various sizes, from compact and mobile units to more extensive, fixed systems such as Cath Labs. The size and mobility of the device depend on the type of surgeries performed and the space in the operating room. Smaller, mobile C-Arms are ideal for facilities with limited space and offer the flexibility to move between different rooms or departments. These models typically have a smaller footprint and may even feature a monitor on top of the C-Arm instead of having a separate monitor cart, further conserving space.

Ease of Use and Ergonomics

Surgeries can be lengthy and demanding, so choosing a user-friendly and ergonomic C-Arm machine is essential. An easy-to-use system will reduce the learning curve for staff and minimize fatigue during long procedures. Look for a system that is counterbalanced with intuitive controls, easy-to-read displays, effortless movements from AP to lateral, and adjustable components to accommodate various users and patient positions.

Compatibility with Other Equipment

When selecting a C-Arm, it’s crucial to consider its compatibility with other equipment in your facility, such as monitors, surgical tables, and imaging software. A seamless integration with your existing setup will prevent workflow disruptions and help you avoid additional expenses for upgrades or replacements.

Modern C-Arm machines typically feature digital output capabilities, allowing for easy connection to PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) and EMR (Electronic Medical Record) software. However, some older models may only offer PACS connectivity and not support exporting images in the JPG format required by certain EMR software.

To ensure smooth integration and optimize the efficiency of your medical practice, verify the compatibility of the chosen C-Arm unit with your specific EMR software. If necessary, explore additional hardware or software solutions that can bridge any gaps between the C-Arm machine and your existing infrastructure.

Service and Support

Finally, consider the level of service and support the manufacturer or distributor provides. A reliable C-Arm is an investment in your practice, so it’s crucial to have access to prompt technical help, maintenance, and repairs when needed. Inquire about training programs and resources available to help your staff become proficient in using the new equipment.

Making the Right Choice

Choosing the right C-Arm for surgery involves evaluating image quality, size, mobility, ease of use, compatibility, and service support. By weighing these aspects, you can select a system that meets your needs and enhances your surgical procedures’ efficiency and effectiveness.

Skan-C Vs. Other C-Arms

BY NOW, I’M SURE YOU’VE ALL HEARD OF SKANRAY, RIGHT?

If you’re shaking your head no, then by the end of this light read, you’ll make sure EVERYONE knows who Skanray is.

We started in 2008 with five ex-GE engineers who wanted to create something that would change medical imaging forever. We’re now in 2023, and Skanray has a global presence in manufacturing and R&D and is also a globally certified Medical Equipment Manufacturer (Retail/Oem)!

Skanray now has seven manufacturing plants globally, 50 plus world-class

products, 80 plus advanced technology patents, 500 plus MedTech professionals, and 126,000 plus Medical Equipment Installations across the globe!

In April 2020, David Orlando took over as CEO of Skanray Americas, making ImagPros the master distributor of all Skanray products across the US.

Dave is known as the C-Arm expert in the industry, as he has been selling them for over 20 years.

He has dealt with OEC, Siemens, Genoray, Phillips, Ziehm, etc… After learning more about the Skanray technology and visiting the manufacturing plants in India and Italy, Dave quickly realized Skanray had something very special. His comments on the company were

“Skanray is on its way up to being one of the top dogs in the industry.”

And we meant that.

The Skan-C is our flagship product which comes equipped with advanced digital technology, 2.5 million image storage, impeccable image quality, UPS battery backup, integrated Dicom, dual high-resolution LED monitors, class 2 laser, USB ports/cd burning, a 5-year warranty, remote diagnostics, the LOWEST RADIATION SCATTER on the market, and so much more!

WARRANTY:

If you’ve ever purchased a C-Arm before, you know that they almost always come with a 1- year warranty, whether brand new or refurbished. And if it is a refurbished system, most likely, it’s about 20-plus years old. Once that warranty expires, you absolutely have to purchase a service contract ranging from $8-15k a year. That’s around $1,000 per month to service something that may or may not work that morning. I know doctors and techs know that a C-Arm is how you treat your patients and bring revenue into your practice. If your C-Arm isn’t working, you’re canceling patients, rescheduling, and losing money. The Skan-C is a brand new C-Arm with a 5-year warranty, giving you peace of mind so you don’t have to worry about anything for a full five years!

IMAGE QUALITY:

We have found the perfect balance! While using less power, we still get the same, if not better, image quality you’d expect from one of your high-cost systems. Manufacturing our own tubes in-house is a huge advantage for Skanray. It allows us to control the tube while improving image quality precisely. The way we process our images allows us to get impeccable images. We often compare the Skan-C to a Tesla, which requires less power to get high-end performance.

5-YEAR COST OF OWNERSHIP:

The Skan-C is equipped with a 5-year warranty, making it the lowest 5-year cost of ownership. Any other system will have a 1-year warranty, requiring you to purchase a service contract in years 2-5. So at the end of 5 years, you’ll spend an additional $40k+ on top of the system’s purchase price. Unfortunately, in many cases, you’re left with a 20-plus-year modality.

REMOTE DIAGNOSTICS:

Picture this, it’s a Thursday at 3 pm, and you are getting ready for a full day of cases on Friday, but your 2003 C-Arm just broke down, you called the service company, but they can’t get out till Friday evening, and even then they won’t know what’s wrong until they arrive.

Most of the time, we can fix the problem through an internet connection. With our software, we can dial into the system and diagnose the issue remotely. If not, we know what’s wrong before we arrive on site. We will overnight parts and have an engineer on-site the next day—minimizing YOUR downtime and having to reschedule patients!

RADIATION:

Although we have so many extraordinary qualities, our zero to none leakage radiation would have to be the one I’m most proud of. Our engineers have done studies, and our system produces the LOWEST RADIATION EXPOSURE ON THE MARKET! This is accomplished by our Skanshield/Skansafe technology.

What to Consider When Buying a C-Arm

If you’re in the market for a new C-Arm, there are some essential things to consider before making a purchase. It’s not just about the initial cost. Other factors include the 5-year cost of ownership, financing, warranty, radiation exposure, room setup, applications training, and mobility. Here we will discuss these considerations in detail so you can make an informed decision when selecting the right C-Arm for your medical practice.

5-Year Cost of Ownership

Looking at the total cost of owning and operating a C-Arm over five years is essential. This includes the initial purchase price and associated expenses, such as service contracts and repair costs, that may arise during this period. At ImagPros, we offer extended warranties and service contracts that cover parts and labor for up to five years after purchase, giving you peace of mind with your equipment investment. Learn more about the 5-year cost of ownership between a new and refurbished C-Arm here.

Warranty

The warranty changes depending on the model of the C-Arm you are considering and whether it’s new or refurbished. For example, a new Skan-C C-Arm comes with 5-year parts and a 1-year labor warranty, while a refurbished C-Arms comes with a 1-year part and labor warranty. It’s essential to understand what the warranty covers and for how long before purchasing.

Radiation Exposure

Radiation exposure is essential when considering which type of C-Arm to buy. For example, the Skan-C C-Arm has a patented radiation technology that reduces exposure. This is beneficial for all practices that use fluoroscopy on a weekly basis.

Other considerations include a lead vest and thyroid collars (two included with every C-Arm purchase at ImagPros). In addition, it’s also a requirement to wear radiation badges that are monitored on a monthly basis. These badges monitor radiation exposure for your doctors and rad techs to make sure they aren’t being overexposed.

Room Setup

It is important to ensure you have enough space in your room to accommodate your C-Arm during procedures. For example, room layouts should be 10×10 minimum, 10×12 is better, and 12×12 or larger is best. Typically these rooms are required to be lead-lined, but requirements differ from state to state.

With each C-Arm purchase, ImagPros offers a free shielding plan, which helps protect staff, patients, and the environment, and keeps your practice in compliance. To learn more about our customized shielding plan click here.

Your room should have a 110v 20 amp dedicated outlet ideally an ethernet cord to plug into the monitor cart, if a large monitor on the wall is desired then having a plug on the wall is needed. Also, if possible having a recessed plug on the floor for the table is nice for reducing trip hazards but not required.

Applications Training

C-arm

When purchasing any type of medical imaging equipment, you must have access to proper training and education to get maximum use out of your device. For example, the Skan-C and OEC C-Arm have comprehensive training packages that include in-person applications training, live cases, online courses, instructional videos, and live webinars. When you partner with ImagPros, our knowledgeable team of professionals can answer any questions about proper use and maintenance.

Moveability

The moveability of the C-Arm is another vital factor to consider before buying. Skan-C has a 40°over-rotation, while the OEC has 25° unless it’s the Super-C, and these models are hard to find. The over-rotation is important for being able to move the device around to meet your needs. For example, the more over-rotation you have in your C-Arm, the less you have to move the patient around.

Financing

Do you pay cash out of pocket or do you finance? Most of our doctors find that financing is the way to go. This way you’re able to keep the cash in your bank to run and operate your business effectively. Financing offers deferred payments which allow you to get the system in the door making revenue before worrying about any payments. Please also make sure that your financing solution qualifies for IRS Rule 179. This will typically put between 30%-35% of your purchase price back into your bottom line at the end of the year. There are good finance programs and bad finance programs. Be sure to ask about pre-payment penalties, rates, and loan terms.

These are only some of the C-arm options with various features and advantages. By working with a company that specializes in connecting customers with the right medical imaging equipment, you can be sure to find the perfect fit for your practice.

ImagPros provides a wide selection of C-arm systems from the top brands in the industry, as well as installation and maintenance services. Contact us today at 248-951-9020 to find the perfect C-arm for your needs.

C-Arm Cost of Ownership: The 5-Year Breakdown

A C-Arm, also known as fluoroscopy, is a medical imaging device that provides real-time imaging of patients during surgery. These are used in various settings, including pain management facilities, outpatient surgery centers, orthopedic clinics, and more. If you’re considering purchasing a C-Arm, one of the first questions you’ll need to answer is how much it will cost. It’s not as simple as the upfront cost.

With medical imaging systems, the initial purchase price is only a small part of the overall cost. We’re here to dive deep into the full 5-YEAR COST OF OWNERSHIP with you! We’ll examine the costs associated with the initial purchase, maintenance, warranty, and financing.

You have three choices when purchasing a C-Arm: new, used, or refurbished. New/refurbished systems typically only have a one-year warranty. This leads to buying an extended contract ranging anywhere from $8K – $15K per year. Whereas some brands, such as the Skan-C, come with a five-year warranty, while used systems do not.

You can purchase used/refurbished systems for as little as $40,000 to over $100,000. In contrast, a new system could cost $70,000 to over $200,000, depending on the size and features. New and refurbished systems are often equipped with a one-year standard warranty. Either route, owners are left with the choice to purchase a yearly contract to cover parts and labor.

C-Arm Cost of Ownership: The 5-Year Breakdown

Example- Refurbished vs. New

  • $40,000 for a four-year warranty on a 15-year-old refurbished system. With an original purchase price of $55,000, the five-year cost of ownership is $95,000.
  • $50,000 for a four-year warranty on a new system, with an original purchase price of $150,000, and the five-year cost of ownership is $200,000.

Always make sure to factor in the repair cost and any downtime associated with those repairs. Even with proper maintenance, unexpected failures can occur. Although some broken parts may be covered under warranty, many are not. Downtime = patient cancellation, unsatisfied customers, and loss of revenue. Customers under service contracts take precedence and have guaranteed response times over customers who aren’t under warranty.

For example, the glassware, which includes the x-ray tube, image intensifier, and camera, are among the most expensive parts. These are typically prorated with most warranties which put the cost of repair burden back onto the end user. Review your warranty before purchasing to ensure you understand what is and is not covered.

Preventative maintenance is critical and can elongate the life of your system. Each state is different, so make sure to check your local state regulations to find out how many PMs are required per year for your fluoroscopy machine. PMs range anywhere between $850 to $2,000 per visit.

When it comes to paying for your C-Arm, there are many options to consider. Do you pay cash, or do you finance? Most of our doctors find that financing is the way to go.

This way, you can keep the cash in your bank to run and operate your business effectively. Financing offers deferred payments, which allows you to get the system in the door making revenue before worrying about any payments.

By now, I’m sure you’ve come to realize that the cost of owning a C-Arm system goes far beyond the initial purchase price. When budgeting, you need to consider installation, maintenance, repair, and warranties. Considering these factors, you can decide whether a new or refurbished system makes the most financial sense for your organization.
